HONOURS  AND AWARDS 2008

THE CANADIAN SQUARE & ROUND SOCIETY
Award of Excellence

This is the CSRDS's highest award and is reserved for any dancer or caller/cuer or leader who deserve special recognition and are members of the Society.  The recognition is reserved for those whose contribution to square, round, contra, clogging and line dancing have been above and beyond the normal activity and well outside the activities of the average participant. Accomplishments could be either a single, exceptional result in a short period of time, or a steady, continuing, above-average contribution over a long period of time.

Maureen & Gary Geldart, Pierrefonds, QC

Gary and Maureen began square dancing in 1993 with the 'Swinging Stars' and have been active on the club's executive for over 5 years. They have also been very much involved in the 'Border Boosters Square and Round Dance Association', serving terms as Dance Directors and Vice-President Couple.

In 1998, Gary and Maureen were elected as Quebec Provincial representatives of CSRDS.

In 1999, they laid the groundwork that eventually brought the 15th National Convention to Montreal in 2006.

From 1998 until its demise, Maureen & Gary were advisers to the Canadian Dancers News, ultimately recommending to the society its being discontinued.

As members of the board of Directors, they suggested & received Board approval to institute the current policy of recognising local awards and began the devolvement of the current society award certificate, which later became the basics of the society banner.
They rewrote the Honours & Awards Guidelines. Scoring system and Terms of Reference. They became chair-couple of the Honours & Awards Committee and Gary is the current Vice-President of the Society. For one year, they handled the 1 866 toll free line.

They have been active in promoting square & Round dancing from coast to coast
and their hard work and dedication on both the local and national level make Gary and Maureen worthy recipients of the Society's Award of Excellence."

Lorraine & John Kozera, Oak Bank, MB

John and Lorraine have been active in the organizational aspects of square dancing since they began dancing in 1977 with the Paws 'n Taws Square Dance Club in Winnipeg. Many hours of personal time and finances have been invested in the leadership roles at club, association, federation and national levels.

They served on the Winnipeg Crocus Festival Committee from 1980 to 1986 as Special Events Chair and from 1986 to 1993 as Registration couple. John and Lorraine served on the two Canadian National Conventions that were held in Winnipeg. They initiated the production of a Manitoba Square Dance Licence Plate.

John and Lorraine truly enjoy every minute that they give to the square & round dance organization, it has given them a healthful exercise program and an opportunity to meet and work with the many wonderful dancers across Canada and around the world.

After 30 years (and counting) of devotion & dedication to the Canadian square & round dance community John & Lorraine are true recipients of this award

 Les Greenwood,  Park Hill, ON

Les began square dancing in 1966 with the Exeter Promenaders and started calling in 1968. Over the years he has called for many clubs within the South Western Ontario Association (35 years with the Clinton Calico Cats.27 years with the Sarnia Georgeanna Squares and 20 years with the London Calico Cats)

Les enjoys working with new dancers and hosts basic programs whenever there is an opportunity. He has Called, Cued and Instructed in more place is than we have space to list in this short brief. His devotion and dedication to the dancers of Ontario as well as the Canadian Square Dance community is the best. If it needed to be done Les probably did it. At Canadian Conventions Les and his busload were always present.

Les, known for his great sense of humour, always has a tale to tell.

In 1998, Les was presented with the Ontario Trillium award.

Congratulations on this Award of Excellence and thank you for your many years of service.

Long Service Award

Paul Lelland & Freda Macdowall, SK

Freda & Leland began their square dancing career in 1965 at Prince Albert SK. At that time, there were seven clubs and six callers in the zone 2 area. Over time with moving and age, both callers and clubs began to diminish,

Eventually there was only one club left and no regular caller

Freda & Leland were kept busy making sure guest callers and fund for expenses were available for each new season, they borrowed tapes and eventually the club purchased their own in order to keep square dancing alive,   Every Monday evening from 1988 to 2007 Freda & Leland with the help of a few  *ANGLES* encouraged and taught new dancers.

For many years, they served on the SSRD Federation filling many positions.

It was though their dedication and devotion that square dancing is still available in the zone 2 area of Saskatchewan.

After 42 years, they have earned this Long Service Award

Criteria

a) Award of Excellence

The standards for this award are very high and therefore a nomination must be fully substantiated with details of the results of the accomplishment to be recognized. This might include news items, copies of publications, or copies of samples of the result of the candidate's work.

Accomplishments to be recognized are only those which are above and beyond the normal activity. For example, positions on committees, boards, etc. would not be considered, unless the work in that position resulted in an outstanding contribution to the movement which far exceeds that normally expected by an incumbent in that position.

Accomplishments which are local in scope will normally be recognized by local organizations; therefore Society awards will mainly be national in scope.  However, this does not preclude the Society from also recognizing an exceptional local accomplishment and granting an Award of Excellence

Accomplishments can be in any field of endeavour, performed by any individual in the Canadian Square & round dance movement. Accomplishments could be a single exceptional result over a short period of time or a steady, above average devotion over a very long period of time.

Accomplishments should be original in nature or be the recognition of an opportunity not normally seen by others. The result may be reflected externally or internally. Externally, the accomplishment could enhance the future of the movement by providing more visibility in the public's mind. Internally, the accomplishment could be a positive improvement in the movement now, with some evidence that the improvement will be lasting. Improvements in organization or administration may also be recognized provided they lead to major improvements due to innovation.

b) Long Service Award:

The nominations MUST set out the EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE (non-profitable) the nominees have provided to the activity through involvement in their club(s), Associations, Federations, etc. Such service being beyond that of the average Dancer/Caller/Cuer/Leader. Length of service shall normally be a minimum of 15 years.
